The general consensus is this: SofiaLee “Lee” Lugo is not only an incredible cellist, but an incredible person. Her friend, WHS senior Adeeva Ghuman, “admires her greatly as a musician, and also… as a friend and human being.”
One of the many ways that Lugo stands out is her impressive work ethic, though her notable loyalty also shouldn’t be overlooked. “She stands by the people she cares about and stands up for what she believes in,” Ghuman says.
Orchestra Teacher Malcolm Karlan agrees with this assessment wholeheartedly, explaining that Lugo “celebrates others and brings out the best in those around her.”
She is extremely supportive of her peers inside and outside of the classroom. While many others with such talent would most likely be boastful, Lugo stands out for her kindness and modesty. In the words of Mr. Karlan, “despite absolutely incredible talent, Lee is humble.”
Lugo follows up her encouragement with practical advice and is constantly finding ways to help others grow. In school, she “makes our classroom a happier and more productive place,” according to Mr. Karlan. Even outside of the classroom, though, Lugo works to improve her skills as well as aid those around her. She is a member of the WHS Musical Honors Society (Tri-M), where she’s constantly lifting others up while also advising them on how to further their musical skills.
While her kindness cannot be overstated, her talents are also not to be overlooked. Her hard work has definitely paid off, with peers such as Ghuman praising “Lee’s dedication to music and the cello” as “so incredibly inspiring.” Ghuman adds that “her efforts absolutely show through her beautiful playing.” Not only is Lugo very talented, but she plays with a passion that sets her apart from the average musician.
Lugo channels her passion for music into tangible growth and, in doing so, inspires all those around her to do the same. She’s extremely talented, but also a kindhearted, supportive, and hard-working human being who deserves to be recognized for all the good that she does. In other words, she is a true hidden gem.
