This quote is beautiful, but is flawed in one key way: It implies that someone must be either the sun or the moon. Elle Hawthorne, a WHS student, has proven that you can be both. Her peers, such as WHS senior Maya Kesselman, describe her as “really kind” and “always willing to help others.” Moreover, her teachers describe her as not only an exceptional student but also an exceptional human being, who, in English teacher Mrs. Brey’s words, has a “smile [that] brightens the room and always cheers her classmates and me up!”
Elle is an extremely accomplished student and is involved in many activities here at Wilton High School. She is the president of the Racial Equity and Diversity Club and has done an impressive job of attracting new students, inspiring all of those fortunate enough to be around her, and leading the club in fundraisers in order to provide services for community centers that help younger students who otherwise would go without. “She is always more than happy to lend a helping hand, and she never expects thanks or credit in return,” says Kesselman.
In Band Director Mr. Williams’ words, Elle is “a leader and a leader by example. She is our Band President. I’m not sure the band would be what it is if it weren’t for her.” Her organization is impressive, and Mr. Williams describes her as selfless, kind, and “an amazing human being.” One time, he shared, Elle auditioned for a solo and got it, then asked if she could split it with her section so that everyone could have a chance to shine. She is willing to make sacrifices for the sake of those around her and truly wants what’s best for everyone. These qualities make her both an incredible leader and person. “I wish her the best in everything she has going forward in life,” Mr. Williams says.
Elle also volunteers outside of school, tutoring others at least once a week. She has helped teach both math and English at Emperor Tutoring, Your Academics, and Trackside. She goes out of her way to help other people, and “her efforts reflect her belief in serving others and pursuing equality wherever possible,” as Mrs. Brey said.
A good friend, kind person, admirable leader, and “exceptional student and human being” (as Mrs. Brey described her), Elle is always willing to share the spotlight and put others before herself; she has, without a doubt, earned the title of Hidden Gem.
