Sebastian Hunt’s Top Ten Most Anticipated Films Of 2019

Be it high-profile blockbusters or barely-known indies, there’s a lot to look forward to in 2019. Honestly, it’s hard to recall a year this ripe with potential hits – looking at the lineup, there’s at least four films that are nearly guaranteed to make a billion worldwide.

So with that being said, I think it’s about time I produced a list like this. Without further ado, here are my top ten most anticipated films of 2019:

HONORABLE MENTION: Untitled Breaking Bad Film

In theory, this should be my number one. Few pieces of media even rival the affection I carry for Breaking Bad – so, naturally, I was psyched when AMC announced a feature-length film was coming for the property.

There’s just one little problem: outside of the confirmation of its existence from Bryan Cranston, nothing has been said about this project. There are rumors it’ll drop next year, yes. But, rumors do not equal fact. Thus, it’d be unfair to place it in this list. Here’s hoping we get more word on the project soon, though.

  1. Pokémon Detective Pikachu

Will this work? On paper, it shouldn’t. Pokémon is, in addition to being a property I don’t really care about, something I understand doesn’t have a great track record in film. Not to mention that this is a video-game film – a genre that has a good-to-bad ratio worse than almost any other.

But that trailer was just so damn charming. Ryan Reynolds looks like he’s having the time of his life in the titular role, the comedy seems to hit, and the animation on the Pokémon themselves looks gorgeous.

I suppose I wouldn’t be surprised if this turns out terrible. But, I also wouldn’t be surprised if this ends up being the shocker hit of 2019.

  1. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film (technically his tenth, but he counts both Kill Bill films as one), and it looks like it’ll be an absolute riot.

Tarantino has had a near-impeccable filmography, and considering this is *probably* his second-to-last film, you’d think he’d go all in to make this one great. Also, Hollywood-set murder mystery starring Margot Robbie? Count me in.

  1. Gemini Man

Will Smith hasn’t had the best few years. Between a failing marriage and trashy films, he’s not quite as untouchable as he was. Maybe this’ll turn that all around?

Following an assassin (played by Will Smith) who must kill a younger clone of himself, Gemini Man sounds like a lot of fun. Perhaps Will Smith can ask his younger self how to turn his life around.

  1. Terminator 6

Terminator is a franchise that peaked with the first installment, declined in the second, and took a pitfall in the following films. The fact that we’re seeing a sixth film three decades after the first is ludicrous.

But… this one has Linda Hamilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and James Cameron all returning. Dare I be cautiously optimistic…?

  1. It: Chapter Two

Stephen King’s It is a novel that has never gotten an appropriate adaptation. Whilst the 2017 version did a better job than the abysmal 1990 miniseries, it failed to evoke true fear and thus, also failed as an adaptation.

The sequel is said to be closer to the book. Already, some of the more disturbing elements of the novel have been confirmed (such as the infamous Ritual of Chüd). Perhaps this is all an indication that our favorite child-eating clown will finally receive the treatment he deserves.

  1. Joker

A Joker spinoff film (starring Joaquin Phoenix) without Batman is an odd concept. Especially when you consider a live-action iteration of The Joker currently exists in Jared Leto’s portrayal.

But, the footage released thus far looks incredibly artistic, the creative team is excellent, and Joaquin Phoenix is a brilliant actor. Batman and his mythos hold a very special place in my heart, so obviously I’ll hold this film to a high standard. However, I have a gut feeling this film may just meet them.

  1. Captive State

Despite following this film closely, I’m still not 100% sure what it’s exactly about. Something to do with an alien occupation, I think. Oh well. The lack of information makes it all the more intriguing.

  1. Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Perhaps Godzilla: King of the Monsters won’t carry the same thematic weight to it that some other films on this list might. Maybe it won’t win any Oscars. But honestly, who cares? The sequel to the 2014 film is set to reintroduce some of Godzilla’s most classic foes: King Ghidorah (a three-headed dragon), Rodan (a giant pterodactyl), and Mothra (a giant moth).

Sometimes all a film needs to do is show us giant monsters beating each other senseless over famous buildings.

  1. Avengers: Endgame

I don’t like the Marvel films anywhere near as much as some other people do. They’re… fine. Maybe three or four films within the franchise are worth mentioning.

But Avengers: Endgame is no ordinary Marvel film. It’s set to be the franchise’s swan-song – the literal endgame. It truly is going to be an event like no other.

  1. Us

Jordan Peele’s Get Out was the film of its year. Doubling as a horror film and a racial commentary; Get Out earned Peele his first Academy Award for his brilliant script. With all that being said, perhaps I should be more concerned than excited for Us, Peele’s next film. After all, how can anyone follow a film like Get Out?

Nonetheless, I’m stoked. The recently released trailer was highly intriguing – it appears to be dealing with very different (but still insightful) themes than Get Out. Could this be a rare follow-up that one-ups the original? Probably not. But, it’ll still be great in its own right.
